This is not a rant, it’s merely a plea for people to stop saying ‘social media channels’ when they’re referring to the likes of Facebook, Twitter etc…

In my opinion, a ‘channel’ refers to a marketing channel, such as:

  • Advertising (press, outdoor, online etc)
  • Direct Mail
  • Experiential

And on that basis, social media is the marketing channel.

The social media ‘platforms’ include:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • Snapchat
  • Instagram
  • Etc

So, when people say things like ‘we need to decide what social media channel to use to speak to our audience’, they should really be saying ‘we need to decide what social media platforms we want to use to speak to our audience’

Is that clear? I hope so. Its always helpful when people are speaking the same language.

Am I right? If you think I am, please feel free to shower praise upon me in the comments section below. I jest! If you think I’m taking poppycock, then of course, do speak up! Tweet me @mike_mcgrail!
